St. Paul's Tuesday Book Club
St. Paul’s Book Club
You’re invited to join St. Paul’s Book Club. We meet virtually via Zoom on the second and *fourth Tuesday at 6:30 pm , and we read one book a month from a variety of different genres. You don’t need to join in for every book discussion; we have people who come because they are interested in a particular book. You can also join the discussion for only the fourth Tuesday when we all have finished the book if that fits better in your schedule. The group is welcoming and lively, and we all enjoy the difference in age, interest, and experiences. For more information please contact Donna Dick. (*Note: The second meeting will be changed due to the Christmas holiday.)
December – Lessons from the Zoo by J. D. Porter.
(Note – This book is not available at our local libraries so you will have to purchase it from Amazon.)
What can you learn from animals? Find out in this book by J. D. Porter who spent over 40 years working in zoos from animal keeper to zoo director.
Porter had positions with a half dozen of America’s great zoos during the most transformational era in zookeeping in more than a century—a time when zoos went from 19th century menageries to modern day arks. A chance visit to the Atlanta Zoo in the 1970s launched a career that began at Busch Gardens and continued during the construction of a massive new zoo in Toronto. Porter oversaw the animal collection at the Louisville Zoo, directed the redevelopment of the Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, and served as deputy director of the Toledo Zoo during its centennial years. From elephants to apes and belugas to bears, he learned valuable lessons from the countless animals he encountered. Rhinos helped him realize that he will never be too old to learn, and a dog named Joy taught him how to seize the day. But what is the greatest lesson of all? Find out in Lessons from the Zoo. Animals have much to teach us if we will take the time to listen.
Our very own Glenous Favata worked with J. D. Porter during her career at the Toledo Zoo!
